The Extent of the Islamic State's Atrocities

The Extent of the Islamic State's Atrocities

What does Islamic State(IS) want?

In June 2014, the group formally declared the establishment of a "caliphate" - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law, or Sharia, by God's deputy on Earth, or caliph.

IS seeks to eradicate obstacles to restoring God's rule on Earth and to defend the Muslim community, or umma, against infidels and apostates.

What are Islamic State(IS)'s origins?

IS can trace its roots back to the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian. In 2004, a year after the US-led invasion of Iraq, Zarqawi pledged allegiance to Osama Bin Laden and formed al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), which became a major force in the insurgency.

After Zarqawi's death in 2006, AQI created an umbrella organisation, Islamic State in Iraq (ISI). ISI was steadily weakened by the US troop surge and the creation of Sahwa (Awakening) councils by Sunni Arab tribesmen who rejected its brutality.

In April 2013, Baghdadi announced the merger of his forces in Iraq and Syria and the creation of "Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant" (Isis).

In June 2014, Isis overran the northern city of Mosul, and then advanced southwards towards Baghdad, massacring its adversaries and threatening to eradicate the country's many ethnic and religious minorities. At the end of the month, after consolidating its hold over dozens of cities and towns, Isis declared the creation of a caliphate and changed its name to "Islamic State".

The Extent of the Islamic State's Atrocities in Iraq Has Been Laid Bare by the UN

More than 18,000 civilians were killed in Iraq between January 1, 2014, and October 31, 2015, according to the United Nations, which says violence there remains "staggering."

An estimated 3,500 people, mainly women and children, are believed to be held as slaves and 3.2 million people have become internally displaced, it said.

A UN report released on Tuesday said the Islamic State (IS or ISIL) continued to perpetrate systemic and widespread atrocities that could amount to war crimes and possibly genocide.

IS was killing and abducting people opposed to their ideology, people affiliated with the government, and professionals such as doctors, lawyers and journalists, as well as tribal and religious leaders. About half the deaths took place in Baghdad.

The report, which is based largely on the testimony of victims, survivors, and witnesses, describes how IS made "gruesome public spectacles" out of its killings in the form of "shooting, beheading, burning alive, bulldozing, and throwing off buildings."

Women and children held in sexual slavery

Women and children have been subjected to sexual violence, particularly in the form of sexual slavery. The UN believes around 3,500 people are currently being held as slaves by Islamic State(IS).

The violence suffered by civilians in Iraq remains staggering. The so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) continues to commit systematic and widespread violence and abuses of international human rights law and humanitarian law. These acts may, in some instances, amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possibly genocide.

There are approximately 200 mixed races, and approximately 5,000 languages in the world. There are also many different religions. This is the reality of the global community. Although religious people all say they believe in the one true God, they all have different ways of believing, and it is mainly due to these religious differences that conflicts occur around the world. Conflicts also occur due to power struggles.

Today, even though many people say they love their country and want world peace, there has not been peace on this earth. Wars have continued due to religion, and young people continue to die in war.

Along with many NGOs, charitable organizations, and individuals educating people to protect the lives of youth, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) is at the forefront of preventing and ceasing conflicts through its various peace initiatives.

These initiatives include implementing peace education courses throughout the world. Its valuable efforts are essential to the security of mankind and future peace. A peace advocate and international peace lecturer, Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL, has conducted many peace agreements to solve political and religious conflicts as well as educated youths through a practical program of peace education.

Recognizing the efforts of the HWPL Peace Delegation in many parts of the world and celebrating the designation ceremony, the school also unveiled the Monument to commemorate the Declaration of World Peace. The Declaration was presented by Chairman Lee in 2013 on behalf of women and youth of the world at the Peace Gate in Seoul. The Monument is now an emblem of world peace in Noida.

True religion, and False religion

True religion is a teaching that comes from the true God of heaven, and false religion is an arbitrary teaching (religion) or a teaching that does not come from God but from other gods.

All religious people claim they believe in God, say that the word they learn and teach is the words of revelation that came from God, and believe their religion is the best. A religion cannot be considered a true religion solely by having a lot of people (congregation members) or because it is called a religion of tradition. It can only be a true religion if it has the true God and His revealed word.

Though a pastor may claim his own religion and scripture to be true, if he does not know the meaning of that scripture and does not act according to it, he cannot be the messenger who speaks on behalf of God, nor can he be the messenger who walks with Him.

The reason why religious conflicts

Various religions claim to believe in God, but they all differ from each other because the gods they believe in are not the same. And the reason why religious conflicts cause approximately 80% of the world’s wars is that those religions are not God’s religion.

God is the Creator of heaven and earth and He loves His creation. He commanded the people He created to be fruitful and to increase in number. He also told them to forgive, love, and bless one another. In other words, God did not tell them to fight, kill, and curse each other. Thus, the reason religions fight, kill, and curse is that their gods are different.

All Religions should become one

If the people of a religion truly believe in righteousness, truth, perfection, and God, they must throw away their corrupt religion before the true God and become one within God.

Hence, at the 2014 Peace Summit, members from each religion made a pledge in sight of God, the heavens and the earth, all peoples of the world, and the Peace Advocate to become one under God by unifying all religions. This is the only way to cease all wars in the world and to achieve peace—so that it can be left as a legacy to the future generations.
